After attending the Swiss Soca Festival last year, I almost feel compelled to fete in Switzerland. I love Switzerland and find the people so warm and friendly, and yes, there is Soca in Switzerland with a growing fanbase to match. They may not be your high heel wearing. diamonte dressing clientele, but they are the warmest, friendliest individuals that you could ever want to party with. Everyone is up for soca party and I am no longer amazed at any cultures ability to know the music, sing to words and try to fete like a Trini. It is not all about the Rum and Bacchanal here, but it all about the appreciation of sweet soca music. Like most events, I had no expectations and this was no exception. Some of us may be soca boat ride veterans, but this is an intimate setting and all set for the love of soca. All I can say is dress for the weather, as, at this time of the year, it was cold and wet.
This was an epic 4-hour boat ride. Setting off promptly set off at 4pm, we were scheduled to return at 8pm. On board, it was a welcoming reception to rum punch and the overtones of soca music, with Selector Iray on the decks and mic. Once we set off, it did not take long for the feting to start. Selector Iray can probably be considered as the representative DJ for Swiss Soca and along with his team, their aim is to spread the love of soca. Holding parties all over central Switzerland Selector Iray is also part of the team that puts on the Swiss Soca Festival.
Next on the decks was Ali Baba Sound and if you have never heard of them, you will do soon. This DJ played track after track, often with a nearby assault of a demanding ‘a rewind’ from the crowds. This DJ was a machine and with his DJing ability and we all stood by after and applauded with appreciation and that nod of ‘he needs to come to London’. Just ask Release D’Riddim and Hardwine who witnessed his set! This legendary duo raised the roof with their accompliment of soca music and never fail to socarise us all!
This little gem of a boat ride was amazing and an extremely worthwhile trip. Next stop for Switzerland is the Swiss Soca Festival from 8th – 13th September 2019
